Q: I am concerned that my children have 5 year notes for more than $500,000. The recent .25% increase in the Fed Rate concerns me. The kids seem to feel a wait-and-see attitude is the best they can do. I have begged both to make shopping for a long term, fixed rate mortgage their hobby until they get a favorable long term mortgage. Our federal debt combined with a good economy leads me to be certain that rates will increase in the months and years ahead. On $500,000 the .25% increase will cost each $1,250 a year for 30 years which is $37,500.
