Pledged Assets

Q: If I can pledge assets in the form of stocks, bonds and funds, which investment vehicle can be used? If not in an IRA or 401k, does this only apply to a standard brokerage account? Is the actual value of the portfolio what is attached? Or would it be the individual shares? If it is the actual value that is attached and there were some unfortunate losses, and the account is no longer worth what it was, what then?

Q: I read your article on pledging assets to children to purchase a home. Could this work for parents to pledge assets for a second home in California?
